Lionel Messi nears prestigious football record after scoring 604 goals for Barcelona

– Lionel Messi is closing in on Pelé’s historic goals haul for Brazilian side Santos

– Messi’s free-kick against Sevilla on Sunday, October 6, means the Barcelona star is 39 goals off Pele’s total of 643 club goals for Santos and needs 40 goals to break his record

– The Argentine has netted over 40 goals each season for the Catalan giants in the last 10 years

Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is closing in on breaking the 643 club goals netted by Edson Arantes do Nascimiento, popularly known as Pelé, during his 18 years stint at Brazilian side Santos.

Interestingly, no football player attempted surpassing the goal record of the three-time World Cup winner between 1956 and 1974, but Messi appears ready to change all of that.

At the last count, Gerd Müller’s 565 goals for Bayern Munich from 1964 to 1979, did not come anywhere close to breaking the landmark.

Over the past seasons, Messi has continually shown he has the needed qualities to send Pelé’s goal record to the archives this term.

The Argentine play-maker netted over 40 goals each season for the Catalan giants in the last 10 campaigns, and seems well positioned to topple the Brazilian this term.

Since marking his debut in 2004, Messi has netted 420 goals in La Liga, 112 goals in the Champions League, 51 times in Copa del Rey, 13 goals in the Spanish Super Cup, five goals in the Club World Cup and three in the UEFA Super Cup in his 691 appearances for Barcelona.

Legit.ng reported earlier that Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi might be denied access to the United Kingdom to play against any Premier League side should Great Britain succeed in pulling out of the European set up.

The Argentine forward was slammed with 21-month suspended prison sentence by the Spanish courts having being found guilty of evading tax in the country.
