Sowore begins hunger strike to protest DSS’ refusal to release him

– Sowore has begun hunger strike to protest his continued detention

– Federal High Court had ordered the DSS to release Sowore in two ocassions

– The counsel to Sowore, Femi Falana, said his client has refused to eat since Thursday, November 7

The report by Sahara Reporters indicates that an activist and convener of #RevolutionNow movement, Omoyele Sowore, has begun hunger strike to protest his continued detention by the Department of State Service (DSS).

Legit.ng gathered that despite the court order which compelled the DSS to release Sowore, he is still being held by the secret service.

It was learnt that Sowore, who has been detained for 98 days by the DSS, was granted bail twice by the Federal High Court in Abuja.

He, therefore, refused to eat food to protest perceived flout of court order by the DSS.

According the report, the human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, who is Sowore’s counsel, on Friday, November 8, said that his client has refused to see anybody in protest that his rights wer being violated.

He said: “Since yesterday (Thursday) he has refused to come down. He has refused to see anybody and this is in protest that his rights are being violated.

“He has not eaten because the DSS don’t feed him and he is rejecting food from the people who usually take food to him in detention. Yesterday, he said he didn’t want to see anyone including the people who take food to him because there is a court order asking for him to be released, the second one, so he is protesting this.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that the Department of State Services (DSS) reacted to reports which claimed that it frustrated the bid by Sowore to secure freedom following a bail granted by a court.

It was reported that Peter Afunaya, spokesperson of the DSS, said the agency was not officially aware that Sowore had met his bail conditions.
