Nigerian newspapers review for Jan 13: Gowon urges Nigerians to avoid plunging country into conflict

The newspapers review for Tuesday, January 14, leads with a report on the Guardian that a former head of state, Yakubu Gowon, Nobel Laureate, Prof Wole and other Nigerians in the political space warned current Nigerian leaders to avoid acts capable of destroying the country.

The Guardian newspaper reported that the political actors gave the warning at a conference in Lagos where Gowon stated that Nigerians must be total and patriotic and that leaders must ensure the wellbeing of the country in politics, economy and security.

Vanguard newspaper reported that the conference tagged Never Again, was organised by the Nzuko Umunna and Ndigbo Lagos in collaboration with civil society organisations to mark the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Civil War.

Meanwhile, The Nation newspaper reported that the Added Tax (VAT) has risen from 5% to 7.5 % following President Muhammadu Buhari’s signing of the 2020 Finance Bill on Monday, January 13.
